1. CAN YOU HELP ME DECIDE WHICH SERVICE IS APPROPRIATE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY?

ABC offers a variety of different services according to the level of support required.  Whether your child is having trouble with a specific skill such as potty training or language development, or they are engaging in frequent problem behaviours, we can provide an individualised service to meet your needs.

1A Assessment Package

Our behaviour specialist can come to your home or school to conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify any skill deficits or problem behaviours. Our assessment includes meeting with you, the primary caregiver, to collect information about the behaviour of interest. We will also directly observe your child and take data on the target behaviour. Based on the information we collect, we will develop a behaviour plan to meet your child’s needs. Within 2 weeks you will receive a report containing all the information from the assessment along with specific, individualised recommendations that you can implement in your home. Your behaviour specialist is also available following the report should you have any questions or require any additional support. This service is designed for parents or teachers that need help addressing skill deficits or problem behaviour and are able to implement the recommendations themselves.

1B Implementation Package

This package contains all of the support offered in the Assessment Package with the addition of on-the-ground support during the implementation of the recommended protocols. Following the assessment and behavioural recommendations, our ABC specialist will work closely with you to integrate these methods into your everyday life through training and ongoing communication. In addition, we will create any necessary materials according to the behaviour plan which can include things such as token boards, rule boards, or visual schedules.

1C Maintenance Package

While many issues are resolved quickly after implementation of the behaviour plan, some behaviours are slower to change or require a longer period of support. For more difficult behaviours, we can offer you ongoing evaluation and continued monitoring of behaviour targets along with adjustments to the behaviour plan to make it as effective as possible. Your behaviour specialist will continue to work closely with you and your child, analyzing the best way for them to learn and helping you to continue to gain the skills necessary to teach them.

2) WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY FIRST HOME CONSULTATION?

Our home consultation service is completely individualised to the needs of you and your child.

  • First a meeting is scheduled at a time that is convenient for you.  We can visit you at your home, child’s school, or other location as needed.  The assessment typically lasts 2-3 hours.
  • During our visit we will collect information from a number of sources in order to assess the behaviour:
    • Our behaviour specialist will sit with you, your partner, the child’s teacher, nanny, or other professional to collect information about the child and the issues that you are experiencing.
    • Next we will directly observe the child interacting in their normal environment. It is best to choose a time when the behaviour of interest is most likely to occur.  It is important that we are able to see your normal routine and responses without too many outside influences affecting the environment.
    • Our behaviour specialist will also interact directly with your child to get a better idea of any skill deficits as well as strengths and preferences.
  • Within 2 weeks following the assessment, you will receive the Assessment Report. This report will contain all of the information collected during the assessment along with individualised recommendations for your child that you can implement in your home.
  • After receiving the report, our behaviour specialist is available via phone, email, or messaging to discuss the recommendations and answer any questions you may have.

3) IS THE IMPLEMENTATION PACKAGE RIGHT FOR ME?

The package you choose is dependent on a number of factors according to your individual needs. While the Assessment Package provides you with all the information you need to move forward with your child’s behaviour plan, sometimes parents would like more help implementing those methods themselves. Whether you are dealing with a difficult behaviour or you just want extra assistance during those initial steps of the programme, our team is available to get you started on the right path. We will provide all the necessary materials that are customised to your child’s specific needs and preferences. We will come to your home to begin introducing the new methods to your child, all the while training you in the different techniques you can use day-to-day.

4) HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED TO CONTINUE THE MAINTENANCE PACKAGE?

While many behaviours require simple, easy-to-implement solutions, other behaviours can be more challenging and may adapt and change over time.  Our Maintenance Package is there to provide you with ongoing support for more challenging, reoccurring issues. Following implementation of the behaviour plan, our behaviour specialist will follow up with you on how your child is progressing and if you are having any concerns or questions about the plan. Should additional support be needed, we will set up additional meetings and observations that will allow us to continually analyse the behaviour and make adjustments to improve your child’s progress. It is important that your behaviour plan works for you and your child. We will continue to offer methods that are appropriate for your family and will help you in learning and using these methods as you move forward.

5) MY CHILD IS HAVING PROBLEMS IN SCHOOL, WHAT KIND OF SERVICES DO YOU OFFER FOR THIS?

Our consultation service can be provided in a number of different environments such as the home, school, or community. If your child’s teacher is reporting problems in the classroom, we are available to visit the school, meet with the teachers, and design a plan that will work in your child’s classroom environment.

6) I AM NOT SURE IF MY CHILD’S LANGUAGE IS DEVELOPING WELL, IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO HELP HIM?

It can be hard to tell if your child is understanding language or is able to effectively communicate their wants and needs.  While most children’s language skills will grow and expand over time, there are techniques parents can begin using that can help promote the acquisition of language skills. Many problem behaviours are the result of an inability to communicate. Through easy-to-use methods, we can teach you how to get the most out of your time with your child and small changes you can make to increase learning opportunities throughout your day.

7) I WOULD LIKE TO BEGIN POTTY TRAINING BUT HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS READY?

Whether you are trying potty training for the first time with your child, or you have had unsuccessful attempts in the past, we can design a plan based on your child’s current skill level that will help them gain independence in toileting. Using the methods of Foxx and Azron, we will assess your child’s skill level along with any necessary prerequisite skills, provide you with a step by step guide in how to potty train your child, and offer continued communication and support throughout the process, the ultimate goal being improved success and independence for your child.

8) DO YOU OFFER SERVICES FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS OR LEARNING DELAYS?

The methods of behaviour analysis are based completely on the specific behavioural excesses and deficits for the individual. Each behaviour plan is designed specifically for the skill set of the client, based on their individual needs. Regardless of the diagnosis, everyone has their own unique strengths and weaknesses. Our method assesses those strengths and weaknesses and designs a plan that addresses your child’s individual needs. Whether your child is experiencing problems because of developmental or learning delay or simply because they are having difficulty with a certain skill, we can offer support to improve the child’s abilities.

SUPPORT FOR LEARNING DELAYS

Children with special  needs bring many  rewards as well as  challenges. It is important  that parents and caregivers receive the right support and resources to help their children learn and grow in their environment. The methods of behaviour analysis have been proven effective  for a range of different behavioural excesses and deficit, from  improving academic skillsets, helping with language development, establishing appropriate peer interactions and relationships, to helping reduce problem behaviour and increase compliance. Regardless of the diagnosis, each child has the ability to make progress towards goals with the right support and planning, applying these evidence-based interventions.
